PROJECT OVERVIEW
The Veterinary Medicine College in UIUC is now facing some challenges: its isolated physical location. The college is separate from the main campus that students and faculty feel a little disconnected from the main campus.
The purpose of my design is to enhance, energize and intensify the landscape performance of the Vet Med College through the integrative landscape design. Through landing, grounding, finding and founding process, I discover the current situation of the college, find the most important and attractive part of the college, and enhance the identity of the college.
The project site---the College of Veterinary Medicine--- is located to the south side of the university, on the west side of Lincoln Ave. It functions simultaneously as a curriculum, a community and a campus. The college is not only a national leader in the study of human-animal bonds, pathobiology, veterinary nutrition, and clinical oncology, but also a teaching hospital for animals and their caregivers.
After several times of visit and analysis of the site, I realize that the most important resource of college is the animals. People are easily being attracted by the animals because of their interest, curious and love. So I focus on the reciprocity between animals and human, as well as the reciprocity between nature and human in this design.
Landscape Experience
Goals: Using various landscape experiences to improve reciprocity between human and animals, human and human. Build up the relationship between human and animals; Draw people’s attention to the animals, raise awareness of animal protection; Science education, to increase people’s understanding of animals.
Mission: 1. Provide different functional space and activities to satisfy visitor’s interest and curiosity about animals
2. Landscape Design to provide a better place for animals and pets; provide different landscape experience for visitors.
3. Education people with knowledge and raise their awareness of protection of animal.
4. Introducing new element into the college and make it more attractive and dynamic, more identity in university.
VALUE---
Reciprocity
This design project provides chances for people to have reciprocity with animal. The design of pet garden, provide a place to welcome pet owners some place to have leisure time with their pets. The pet café, which is a place for people also for pets, can provide pet owners to enjoy coffee with pet on their knee. The vision education center, offer the movies and videos about the animal research and treatment to satisfy adult and children’s interested in animals as well as some science education that increase people’s understanding of animals
With all this design, I hope the landscape can be a tool to arouse people’s awareness of care and protection about animals. This may help people to think more about the relationship between human and animals, and some traditional thinking that we are the master of animals can be changed—we are friends with animals.
Human Health
This project also focuses on the value of human health. Human health includes mental well-being, physical well-being and social well-being.
The sequence of space of different function, including activity field, pet park, wet land, bird park, horse watching, provide different experience for people to participate in. This natural experience can release people’s tense and benefit the mental health.
For physical health, people are encouraged to take the pet to the park. The pet park, as well as the entire path along the site, provides a walkable, save and aesthetically appealing landscape for visitors. When walking with pet along the path, people can also get exercised and it’s good for their physical health.
For social well-being, the spaces are open to the public which can enhance the social interaction between students, faculties and visitors. The café and pet park provide a place for pet lovers get together and get to know each other.
